Spring is nearly here!


This description of Pruning Day was brought to you by Gerhard van Deventer of Seeff Properties who are running the on site sales and rental office from the Winery. They are on site daily to service your sales and rental needs. Thanks to everyone that attended!

9 August 2008, Women’s day, but also the day that the co-owners of the Croydon Vineyard Estate could share in the start of the 2009 harvest. The owners are invited on a regular basis to participate in the activities of the farm. This forms an integral part of the culture here at Croydon Vineyard Estate.

It is said that “a day without sunshine is a dark day indeed”. At Croydon Vineyard Estate we create the day and add meaning by inviting the owners to prune their own vineyards along with master winemaker Beyers Truter and Corius Visser. We had the perfect day to spend outdoors, and where better than in your own vineyard on your own estate. The idea was to tell the owners why the vines need to be pruned, and then, to teach them how to prune them to get the best harvest.

The day started with a welcome glass of champagne. Each of those present was given a pair of pruning shears and joined the master in the vineyards. After a short but very specific lesson the owners were given a few vines to prune, all under the watchful eye of Beyers himself. Some got the hang of it very quickly while others, with mum, dad and the kids took a little longer as each and everyone wanted to join in. The experience proved to be relaxing and a great deal of fun for the whole family. When you get going you can become very involved in the process! Later the “team” had to be persuaded to leave the vineyards with a firm invitation to lunch and a reward of a VERY strong, sweet wine for their labours, but let’s leave that there!

The Croydon Estate has a fully fledged Lifestyle Centre with its very own gym and pool. It is here that the owners participated in a feast fit for a king with tables full of delights from our own farm kitchen. All this accompanied by nothing more fitting than a glass of red wine from your own estate and music by the very talented Melanie. The owners were invited to taste the latest harvest and to write their comments down. These varied with some who found the wine to be of subtle texture and others finding too much wood. Some disagreed to a greater or lesser extent but all reflected in the wonderful occasion and agreed that perfection was within their grasp. Surely this is the life!

At the end of a meaningful and eventful day the owners wandered home with a song of joy on their lips and an inner peace in their hearts.

Croydon at the Good Food & Wine Show

The Good Food and Wine, where Croydon had a stand attracting 47 048 visitors over the four day Show period. The growth was clearly evident on the Saturday 17 May, where we experienced a record attendance since the Show’s inception ten years ago. The attendance was also higher than 2007 on Thursday 15 May, which is evidence that the targeted promotions with Marie Claire Magazine and the direct mail campaign to restaurants, coffee shops and hotels as well as retail buyers was successful. A number of exhibitors’ reported great business contacts generated at the Show.

The media exposure for the Cape Good Food & Wine Show was in the region of R35 million with exposure across television, radio and print. With regards to radio, they added a new addition this year of Heart 104.9 to the established mix of KFM 94.5, Cape Talk 567, FMR, SAFM and the community stations. Heart 104.9 broadcast live from the Show, both their Breakfast Show on Thursday morning, 15 May and their afternoon drive time show on Friday 16 May. The feedback from their listeners was overwhelming with their general consensus being, “this is not like other Cape Town exhibitions – it’s the best expo. I’ve ever attended.” The highlight for their listeners, interestingly, was the Chefs In Action Theatre.

Croydon welcomes Cape Town Film Studios - now under construction

After a number of years spent processing zoning and environmental requirements, Cape Town’s first, fully fledged sound stage complex will be online in early 2010.The first construction tender was awarded in mid March to enable work on the access roads to commence before month end.

Phase 1 of the development (previously known as Dreamworld Film City) will consist of 5 stages ranging from 2100 to 500 square meters each. Foundations will be in the ground by the last week of June 2008 to meet schedule requirement for a handover at the end of 2009. An additional 6000 square meters of construction and art department warehousing and appropriate production office space will also be developed. Opportunities for permanent tenants in either light industrial or office type accommodation will be structured according to need. Backlot space has been allocated and, for the first time, it will be able to retain sets that might prove valuable to future productions.

Port Festival a great success

Thanks to the more than 50 people that joined us for the grape stomping at the Port Festival on 13 March.

Just wanted to say "Thank You" for a lovely evening last night! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and look foward to participating in many more "Croydon Events".

There are now 20 houses on the Estate either completed or underway. Five are fully complete, 10 are under construction and plans are in place for another five.
